Surviving the Masses!

November 21, 2011

Read this article from Shopping Centre magazine to see how Crystal Peaks Shopping mall in Sheffield, which receives over 13 million visitors every year maintained great looking entrance mats whilst keeping costs down.

In this day and age, every product decision should include consideration of the product’s life cycle. A longer life cycle ensures you get the most out of your investment and your environmental impact is minimised. And when the product under consideration is used and abused by every visitor, you may be surprised to learn just how long your entrance matting can last for.

Crystal Peaks Shopping Mall in Sheffield receives over 13 million visitors every year which, when multiplied by 7 years, equates to an awful lot of feet, foot-borne dirt andwear & tear. Yet this is how long the Milliken Obex Forma entrance matting installation was in place for (and the footfall it survived) before the centre needed to look at replacing it. Mark Jackson, Deputy Facilities Manager at Crystal Peaks, explains:

“In 2003, we installed Milliken Obex Forma at the malls’ six entrances. In order to keep the installations looking their best and working efficiently, they were incorporated into our floor cleaning programme, with our on-site cleaning team vacuuming and spot-cleaning them daily and wet-washing them every week.”

Entrance matting installations are designed to be the dirtiest part of thefloor, so it’s vital that they are cleaned thoroughly and regularly to remove the collected dirt. Proper and timely maintenance not only keeps the installation looking first-class, but also ensures that the maximum life cycle of the product is achieved. On the subject of life cycle, Jackson continues, “For an entrance matting installation to last for 7 years in a busy retail environment such as ours is testament to its quality. It also says a great deal that when we came to look at replacing the matting, that we did so with a variant of the same product.”

“Crystal Peaks is currently undergoing a rolling programme with Syncros to replace our old open construction Obex Forma matting with closed construction Obex Forma matting. We’re also adding a border of the complementary Obex Prior tiles to each installation, which not only adds an element of design, but has also proved to be very cost effective."

Having the right entrance matting plays a critical role in the efficient running of a busy shopping centre. It can help to reduce cleaning expenditure, extend the life of expensive flooring and help to reduce the risk of slip accidents by removing foot-borne moisture. With reference to this latter issue Jackson comments, “We’ve found the Obex Forma to have very good moisture absorbency, which is absolutely critical in the British climate!”
